FAQ on Volunteering:

Does Sakshi have volunteer opportunities ?

How do I apply ?

What credentials should volunteer applicants possess ?

I have no prior experience/references in volunteering/teaching. Can I apply to volunteer in a teaching capacity ?

Where are volunteers based ?

Please note: We receive a lot of applications. We review them all and reply to as many as we can but are not able to reply to everyone. We thank you for your interest and will contact you if and when we have a suitable opportunity available for you.

  • Does Sakshi have volunteer opportunities ? Our projects are fully staffed with trained social workers, teachers, health and legal workers etc but to encourage the spirit of service, we invest in providing customized opportunities for a limited number of qualified applicants. A listing of potential opportunities by skill set / profession can be found at the Harvard Serves website here.

Please fill out only one form. For guidelines on who should apply and how to fill the form, please see next question.

  • What credentials should volunteer applicants possess ? You should be good at what you want to do with us and you should be certain you have the time and motivation to volunteer.

Volunteering is not a hobby or time-pass and something like teaching which is a critical factor in the development services we provide, and for which we get maximum applications, is not something everyone can do well even with training and experience, let alone without.

Teaching is an art. It requires tons of patience, the ability to understand how different children learn (visual vs aural, books vs in-person etc), figure out engaging ways to teach so they imbibe learning while gaining a love for it, and also figure out how to get a child, when he or she faces a block, over it with patience and ingenuity. Our teachers and social workers are trained and have long experience empathizing, understanding and gently, with patience, perseverance, ingenuity and yes, tons of love, guiding and motivating both children and parents to growth and learning. This is the standard of quality in our teachers and social workers that we want to maintain, whether they are the staff in-charge or assisting volunteers.

Volunteering means working with as much diligence as a paid job (in fact, more because at-risk children depend on you and an NGO's staff has diverted some of their hard-pressed time to orienting and managing you) only without pay, from the sheer good-hearted spirit of giving back. Sakshi's Executive and Board, for example, are successful professionals in medicine and business and they work entirely pro bono for Sakshi, some are even major donors, and there are a few original founder members who have donated their time and money since its inception - for 20 years! This is the standard of quality in volunteering we would like to encourage.

Assuming now that you have understood and decided you have the skills and the commitment to volunteer - the skill you wish to utilize in your volunteering and your ability to follow through on the time commitment you are making should reflect in the application form.

Demonstrated skill competence and commitment to volunteering in your application (e.g. solid references, details of experience and in case of arts/tech, work samples pasted as weblinks in application form or emailed to volunteer@sakshingo.org) are a must to get selected and will also help us match you with the right project.

  • I have no prior experience/references in volunteering/teaching. Can I apply to volunteer in a teaching capacity ? Applicants who have subject matter expertise but no or little experience/references for teaching and volunteering can apply to our "Spirit of Service" Field Orientation (SOS-FO) Program which has a registration fees and is customized to the timings participants have available. If selected, this comprises 1:1 orientation sessions with a senior Sakshi executive and a Sakshi Project Director, a guided field visit to see a cross-section of our projects and a short stint at a particular education program under the supervision of a trained Sakshi teacher.

99% new volunteers, especially novices in teaching, start with good intentions but soon realize that they either do not have the aptitude and patience for teaching or overestimated the time volunteering takes and underestimated the commitment both require. (See previous question for our teaching and volunteering quality standards).

This is ultimately unfair to the children they have been assigned to assist in tutoring who receive poor quality education and then are left midway as the "volunteer" drops out. The SOS-FO Program was designed to give novice volunteer teachers without formal training or experience, a taste of volunteering and teaching 101 (and as a bonus, development 101 too) in a supervised low-risk setting. The Program participant can decide, without consequence to the children, if volunteering/teaching is something he/she wants to pursue post the Program and we are also able to assess the candidate's aptitude to continue with our organization as a volunteer teacher.

SOS graduates who decide they do want to pursue learning in development/education can then choose to apply for our SOS-Field Training Programs in one of three tracks - Teacher, Librarian, Social Worker.

The SOS Programs are very limited programs that we undertake to promote Conscientious Volunteering and provide grassroots experience/training to people with education and interest but limited experience in development/education related fields. Applicants are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email connect@sakshingo.org for availability and eligibility.

  • Where are volunteers based ? Our volunteer opportunities, part-time and full-time, based at our centres in Delhi. We can refer a limited no. of accomodations prior out-of-town volunteers have stayed at on a first-come first-serve basis.
