Graduates of Sakshi Vocational Training Centres earn double their previous combined family income. They have the flexibility to get jobs or set up their own business. Able to earn a regular and decent livelihood, they are finally empowered to break the Cycle of Poverty. |
Secondary education is insufficient to earn a dependable livelihood. Class X graduates from destitute areas scrape a miserable existence like their parents as day labor or in desperation take to crime.
Sakshi provides vocational training to low-literate youth in computers, beauty culture & sewing, cutting & tailoring so they can earn a dependable livelihood and finally break the cycle of poverty.
"Vocational education is proposed to be made an important part of secondary education," - Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resource Development.
In its latest Eleventh Five Year Plan, the government too has accorded Vocational Training top priority as the best means to eradicate poverty and stressed the urgency acknowledging that capacity needs to expand from 2-3MM to 15 MM.

Sakshi Vocational Courses Double Family Income and Provide a Dependable Livelihood
Sakshi provides vocational training for low-literate poor girls and boys to make them financially independent while providing for a choice of lifestyles.
Sakshi offers courses in computer training, beauty culture, cutting, sewing and tailoring, and English.
Girls who want more flexibility can become freelance beauticians or open an in-home tailoring service. Computer courses provide government-backed JSS certificates and Sakshi organizes recruiting sessions with corporates.
The important thing is that these courses equip boys and girls to earn twice as much as what their family would earn combined .

Sakshi Sewing, Cutting and Tailoring Centres: This gives girls' flexibility. They can set up their own tailoring business at home. They can make items like dolls' clothes for sale. At the least, they can do their own housework at and stretch the meagre family income. |
Importantly too it is a regular income, with opportunity for growth as they build their businesses or get salary increments.
Impact on Girl Child Upliftment and Women's Empowerment
When an 18 year old girl showcases her ability to achieve a better socio-economic life, it does more for improving the perception of the girl child in her neighbourhood than a hundred lectures or a million pamphlets.
The girls below are Lakshmi, Puja, Yasmeen and Farhana who completed the computer training course at Sakshi's Vocational Training centre in Jasola and were successfully placed at Tech Mahindra and Vodafone.

These young girls aged 18-20 not only received professional training in computer skills but also gained confidence to go out into the world through the course.
All four girls come from families with a weak economic background, with 6-7 members earning Rs. 4500 per month combined . In the beginning, they did not have the confidence needed to succeed in the career world but what they did have was a desire to learn and get as much from the program as they could.

As the course progressed, they not only learned subject skills but also learned to communicate, work in teams and accomplish projects. Healthy peer interaction and a positive environment of learning infused such confidence in them for winning over the challenges in life that they found jobs in their very first placement sessions organized by Sakshi. Their success not only helps them and their families but serves as an inspiration to others and helps us realize our dream of helping needy members of society who only need a little support and a platform to show their calibre.
Vocational Training is thus a powerful tool. By making the destitute financially independent, it breaks the cycle of poverty, breeds confidence, self-respect and turns marginalized youth into responsible citizens of society. Moreover, it is possibly the single most effective program for the upliftment of women, according them the ability to chart their own destinies.
It is such an important addition to the Sakshi portfolio that we must acknowledge our eternal debt to our former President, Mr. Satish Tandon, who pointed us in this direction and then utilized his business acumen, experience and connections to establish the program.
